
(Beijing, April 18) The men's 50m rifle prone final of the "Good Luck Beijing" ISSF World Cup concluded at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall this afternoon, with world No.1 Australia's Warrant Potent winning the gold medal with a result tying the current world record of 704.8 points, 0.5 point ahead of the runner-up.
Thomas Tamas of the US earned the silver with a total score of 704.3 points; his teammate Michael McPhail who had finished the qualifications fourth achieved a stunning score of 106.1 and a total score of 704.1 in the final, sending himself to the third place on the podium.
China's Olympic champion Jia Zhanbo, ninth in the qualifications with 596, was stopped from advancing to the finals. His teammate and Olympic hopeful Qiu Jian and 2006 Asian Games champion Liu Gang, both out of form, suffered the same setback with the identical score of 590.
As world No.1 in the men's 50m rifle prone, Potent led the qualification round with 599 points. In the final, he was challenged by American Tamas, and trailed by 0.1 point after nine shorts. In the last shot, Potent managed to score 10.7 to secure his win by a narrow margin of 0.5 point. His final result of 704.8 was also a world record mark.
Jury Sukhorukov and Artur Aivazian, both from Ukraine, finished fourth and fifth with 701.5 and 701.0 respectively.
Sergei Kovalenko of Russia, Bjoem Pantzar of Sweden and Maik Eckhardt of Germany ranked sixth to eighth with 700.1, 699.8 and 699.7 respectively.
