Du earns gold in women's 50m rifle 3 positions

(Beijing, April 17) On the sixth day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 ISSF World Cup, Chinese veteran Du Li demonstrated her superb skills with an outstanding result of 102.7 points, thus earning the gold in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions with a total score of 692.7 points. World No.1 Sonja Pfeilschifter from Germany had to settle for the silver by a margin of 1.9 points.

Du finished second in the qualifications with 590pts, 1.0 point behind Pfeilschifter.

At the beginning of the final, Du and Pfeilschifter took turns to lead the others. After the fourth shot, Du trailed her Germany rival by 0.5 point. In the fifth shot Du scored 10.3, while Pfeilschifter took quite some time before pulling the trigger for a disappointing 9.3. Du then moved up to the first spot, also by 0.5 point.

In the following shots, Pfeilschifter, who seemed to have failed to adjust her mental state properly, scored two 9.8, while Du made two full marks and eventually clinched the title with a total score of 692.7. Pfeilschifter had to be content with the silver with 690.8.

Du's teammate Yin Wen, failed to do well in the final and finished eighth with 679.2.

Placing third to seventh were Athens Olympic champion Lioubov Galkina of Russia (685.3), Eva Friedel of Germany (684.7), Sydney Olympic runner-up Tatiana Goldobina of Russia (683.0), Olga Dovgug of Kazakhstan (682.7) and Natallia Kalnysh of Ukraine (679.9) respectively.

China's Olympic hopeful Wu Liuxi and Czech veteran Katerina Emmons who won the women's 10m air rifle a few days ago finished 18th and 26th with 579 and 578 respectively and were eliminated early in the qualifications.
