Day Three: A two-gold haul for host China

(Beijing, April 14) Host China began its gold haul on the third day of the "Good Luck Beijing" ISSF World Cup as Athens Olympic champion Zhu Qinan claimed the men's 10m air rifle gold while Gao E won the women's trap final in style.

In the men's 10m air rifle, a traditionally strong event for China, Zhu didn't shoot well in the qualification round and got 597 to rank fifth. His teammates, Athens Olympic runner-up Li Jie, and Olympic hopeful Cao Yifei failed to enter the final with 595 and 594 tandem.

Other marksmen falling in the qualification round included Asian Championships winner Are Hansen of Norway, Athens Olympic second runner-up Jozef Gonci of Slovak.

In the final, Hungarian Peter Sidi, top finisher in the qualifications, gradually bowed out of the title contention due to several 9 points. After the eighth and ninth shots, American Matthew Emmons moved to the first place, followed by Zhu by a narrow margin of 0.2 point. In the last shot, Zhu maintained his form to outscore Emmons 10.4-10.1 for a 700.8 win.

Matthew Emmons had to be content with the silver on 700.7 and Gagan Naranga of India earned the bronze with a score of 700.3.

In the women's trap, Gao led the qualifications with 71 hits while her teammate, World Championships winner Liu Yingzi who will represent China in the Beijing Olympics, failed to enter the final after placing 11th with 67 hits. Chen Li, China's Olympic backup shooter, was also eliminated after placing 26th with 64 hits.

Gao missed two shots in the final, but she managed to set the pace and ended with a perfect score of 93. Following Gao were DPR Korean Pak Yong Hui and Russian Irina Laricheva, on 90 and 89 tandem.
